The 30 day countdown to home opener..how do you prepare?

March 11, 2009: Since it’s still 33 days until my own Cubs home opener..I’m just preparing my blog entry. For some fans it’s a ritual, it’s a series of preparations, that one fateful day when you can start over. It’s kind of like New Year’s Day. Everything is fresh and new…the year is right in front of you, shiny, crystal clear, untainted. That’s how the start of a new baseball season feels. The fresh grass, the newly cleaned stadium, that had remnants of last year’s season completely erased. The past doesn’t matter. Only THIS year does. Only the present. There is NOTHING like your own home opener; nothing. I mentally start preparing 30 days out. My countdown starts on March 14th. When does yours?

Ahhhh a true fan you are! I used to countdown to home opener like that after the season ended. Last year I was way too ********** at the Cubs, so I didn’t start counting down officially until after the New Year. I booked my flight back to Chitown awhile ago, flight from LA to Chicago….long trip, but totally worth it. I’ll have a beer for you if you do the same!

Ha ha thank you :) , that is due mostly in part to you. I changed my blog name, I think it might help if I put something about baseball in general in the title so people think it’s not ALL about the Cubs. Plus I’ve learned that being a female who knows my sh*t about baseball gets a lot of comments and replies. I am shooting for #1 baby!!

That’s good — I am renaming your title on the Latest Leaders as well now. Keep it going.

I have several countdowns for the upcoming season. The first one is two weeks until pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training. Then it’s the deadline for all players to report. Then it’s the first Spring Training game, followed by the first Spring Training broadcast. I added a new one too…the countdown to the Left Field Bleacher Party (see my blog for details on that). Then I do the 30-day countdown to Opening Day. And I’ll be at the game, too. It’s getting close!

Hi Chris..so you are in the left hand bleachers? I don’t do the bleachers for home opener because it’s just too cold. I usually sit anywhere from ro 117 – 126 somewhere in there. I won’t know until the day of the game when I get them from the Cubs back office. I’m so excited I might pee my pants. I’ve missed the Cubs so much, I only started this blog to help me to feel closer to them and to connect with other fans. I’ll definitely check out your blog, I have a systematic way of mapping out home opener every year..it’s brilliant. We always start off at Sluggers so I can say hi to Zack and the crew and get some free cocktails and tip outrageously. Postgame is usually making our way down Clark St, towards the lake, ending at Butch Maguires for some wings and beer (this is why I have to diet before the home opener). Can’t wait to read your blog! GO CUBS. I guess Go Cards….blah.

I’ve always counted down the days until pitchers and catchers report, starting at the Winter Meetings. Because of NFL playoffs, I have something to break up my angst. :) After the Super Bowl, those two-ish weeks are soooo long, but the amount of time between when pitchers and catchers report and the first spring training game feels even longer. After that it gets easier until the last week of spring training. Then it gets tough. Thankfully, there’s MLB Network now. It’s making this wait until every game is televised much easier. April 6 can’t come soon enough!

PS: Congrats on your ranking! I think you and I are the only Chicago fan blogs on that list that I’ve seen since I started my blog in December. :)

Hey there – thx for the comment! Congrats to you as well, I think we are the only females on here as well, which says a lot. It would be too funny to start a White Sox/Cubs blog with both of us managing the hatred for our teams from opposing fans. I have actually come to terms with most of you White Sox fans in the past seasons, mostly because I think you do feel sorry for us in a way, and also because as a true baseball fan, I have to respect the fact that you won the World Series in ’05. I love my Cubbies and bleed Cubby blue, but you have the better looking team. I know February is tough after the SB is over and sports is nearly dormant, but now it gets exciting! I will check out your blog and comment as well, we need to ramp each other up as fellow Chicagoans and chicks who know our baseball! http://gocubbiesjess.mlblogs.com
